Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods
Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, has fought and won two wars, gone on countless quests for the Gods, and killed hundreds of monsters. Now a senior in high school, Percy wants to go to New Rome University with his girlfriend, Annabeth, in peace. No more Gods, no more monsters, and certainly no more quests. But it seems like the Fates hate him. Despite saving the world multiple times, Percy has to fulfill three quests in order to get the three letters of recommendation from Mount Olympus for college. When Zeus' cup-bearer comes to Percy promising a letter of recommendation if Percy finds the cup-bearer's stolen goblet before it falls into the wrong hands, Percy jumps at the chance of being a step closer to his future with Annabeth. Now, the real question is, can Percy, Grover, and Annabeth find the Chalice of the Gods before it's too late?
Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods was by far my most anticipated read this year. The nostalgia I felt while reading made me feel like I was transported back to my younger self while curled up in my bed, reading The Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan did an amazing job capturing Percy's personality and showing how he has matured since the war. Throughout the book, it really shows how Percy never had the opportunity to be a kid, but after everything he's been through, he's just thankful to be alive.
There were several times when my Percabeth heart exploded. Percy and Annabeth's love for each other was so heartwarming. You could feel their love for each other seeping through the pages into your heart. There was banter, kisses, jokes- everything that makes up Percy and Annabeth's dynamic. I nearly died and went to Heaven whenever Percy's thoughts drifted to marrying Annabeth; words cannot even begin to express my happiness. Percy and Annabeth are the definition of love.
The original trio is back together for a risky quest with Annebth and her quick thinking, Percy and his sarcastic comments, and Grover balancing the trio out with his innocent yet chaotic personality. Percy Jackson fans have not gotten an original trio book in years, but this one was just as good as the rest.
I wasn't too upset that there weren't such high stakes in this book compared to the previous books. Percy isn't facing the end of the world or a God that can kill him and everyone he loves; instead, he is growing up, which is almost as scary as the end of the world.
One thing I would have liked to happen in the Chalice of the Gods was for Percy to encounter either Nico, Thalia, or one of the Seven. It felt odd reading the books without any of them making an appearance, especially since they were so important in previous books. Percy also did not go to Camp Half-Blood at all, which made me sad when I realized that he has officially aged out of being a camper at Camp Half-Blood.
However, I still loved this book! It was a fun, lighthearted read that was a throwback to the past. I can't wait to read the next book, Percy Jackson and the Wrath of the Triple Goddess, in which Percy goes on a quest for his second college recommendation letter!
